When a new orphaned baby elephant arrives at The Transit Home, all the other elephants are very curious and one or two will stay close and soothe it by stroking with their trunks.

Eventually when it is strong enough to join the rest of the orphans out by the lake, it will be 'adopted' by another older elephant and nurtured and protected by her (it is usually a her)! This is a composite by the artist (artistic licence allowed here).

The tiny elephant at the front is Flo when I first found her, the two either side are her at one year old and the larger ones are pre-release elephants before they go back to the wild at about 4 years old and fully weaned.
